The Supreme Court of the United States today adopted a revised version of the Rules of the Court. The revised version will take effect on May 3, 1999. The Court received public comment on proposed amendments released on October 6, 1998. Those proposals, as adopted, include changes to Rule 33.1 designed to aid in controlling the volume of material contained in booklet-format documents. In addition, the Court approved nine minor changes to the Rules. The changes to this Court's Rules 13.3 and 29.6 reflect recent changes made to the Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure. The changes to Rules 5.6, 25.1, 25.3, 32.2, 34.1, 35.1 and 44.2 are part of a continuing effort by the Court to make the Rules clear and unambiguous.

Copies of the revised Rules are available from the Clerk's Office, various legal publishers, and other organizations.

The attached document describes which Rules were revised. The Clerk's Comments are not part of the Rules, but are furnished to assist readers in understanding the changes.
